MMObility: Puzzle Pirates is perfect on the iPad, but Fleck falls - Joystiq

Fleck screenshot

It’s been a week of ups and downs for me. The mobile MMO market is the often-ignored stepchild of the greater genre, so when a great new MMO comes along, I rejoice. And when a fun, older MMO closes down, I feel like weeping. As the mobile market begins to take over all of creation (and will probably make time travel possible as well), it’s so good to see a game like Puzzle Pirates finally make its way to mobile devices. Sure, it’s just iPads for now, but an Android version is marked for release this summer. This is a game That has been begging for a mobile release for some time now.

Meanwhile, Fleck is an odd little MMO to Self Aware Games that I have covered in the past but that is soon closing down. I love the look and feel of it, but its real-world-based gameplay might be too odd for many to enjoy. Still, it had issues finding its footing.

Let’s talk about both in today’s MMObility column.

Puzzle Pirates screenshot

First, Puzzle Pirates . Ah, what a perfect game for a tablet! When I first played with an iPad – and later other tablets – I wondered how long it would be before we saw the fantastic puzzle-based MMO on touch devices. It’s made for touch, with puzzles That feature sliding parts, color-matching, and big, beautiful buttons. For those who have never played Puzzle Pirates , its description might sound like a romp through a candy-colored playland That is reserved for children or casual soccer mods and dads. The Choice Is That the puzzle-based gameplay hides some of the most in-depth team play you can find in MMOs today.

“There are other jobs, and they all work together in real time while we’re being commanded and steered by the the player who owns the ship.”

For example, I can join a crew of fellow players and jump onto a player-owned ship. Each player takes a job at a different station. I like to do bilging, a game of matching That Affects how quickly the ship can move. It Represents a bilge pump That keeps water from filling up the ship. Other players will work and sailing minigame, another for cannons, and another one for carpentry repairs that helps keep coming. There are other jobs, and they all work together in real time while we’re being commanded and steered by the the player who owns the ship. You can even fill out some of the positions on the ship by NPCs or join an NPC crew For those times when you can not find other players.

The result is a game of ship-to-ship PvP That is dependent on the abilities of players and the way Those players not only interact with the puzzles but with the rest of the crew. Once a player catches another ship, the players grapple and then fight hand-to-hand via a multiplayer puzzle. It’s absolutely brilliant , so brilliant That the first thing I thought about Star Trek Online was, “Why can not it have multiplayer ship interaction like Puzzle Pirates ? “

The game works fairly well on an iPad. It does crash once in a while, but I only have an iPad 2, so That might have something to do with it. Some puzzles, like carpentry and brawling, do not work as well with the touch-controls. They work , do not get me wrong, but not as well as others like bilging. In a game That offers puzzle-based gameplay for everything from gambling to crafting, it has to be a smooth experience. Luckily, this is not watered-down version. This is the same game you’ll find in the standard version, the same community and servers. I actually prefer the mobile version because the puzzles feel so much more natural on touch, and the UI has been designed to slide away when not in use. For lack of a better description, Puzzle Pirates on the iPad you meant to be .

Fleck screenshot

On this sad news. Likely you’ve read about Fleck on Massively before. It’s a game That overlays a virtual world on a map of the real world. Players have as many goals as they like, but basically the point of the game is to build a unique housing area based on a player’s real-world location or in an instanced and private “backyard.” Dotting the map are real-life landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and the Hollywood sign, and players can visit them to unlock Achievements different.

On top of the social world and all of the cool building features (I have a house located on the spot where my real-life house is!), there are zombies to deal with. Yes, zombies. Occasionally players will encounter zombies pods growing around the world. These pods can be allowed to grow into powerful creatures or can be dispatched before they mature. The advantage of growing zombies Is That they hand out a good amount of experience and possibly other goodies when they are killed. Players invite each other to fights zombies in the hopes of maximizing the experience. The fact That it’s hard to describe the game might point to some of the Reasons That the game is closing. It’s a great title and works well in the browser and the iPad, but it’s so … odd.

“I have to admit that I had issues figuring out what I wanted to do in the game. Over time I would log in just to collect flowers and kill a few zombies. “

I have to admit that I had issues figuring out what I wanted to do in the game. Over time I would log in just to collect flowers and kill a few zombies. It’s a blast to explore in Fleck , but I’m not sure with the new hotel real-life map as a background is the best choice. It just sort of sits there and remains blank in most places. I’ve praised Life is Magic as an example of how to make an in-game, real-world-based map because it takes That blank map and covers it with a cartoony coating. Fleck is a game That suffers from the classic problem of location-based: It only works well where many players congregate. Where there are Fewer players, there’s less of it to.

The in-game cash-shop can be accessed with real-world cash or in-game coins, but prices are mostly too high. If a developer is going to make a game That obviously attracts younger players, it needs to to consider just how much money younger players have and are willing to spend. I’m only guessing, but the heavy prices, empty areas of the map, and housing maintenance might have been too much for younger players.

Either way, it’s been a fantastic week thanks to Puzzle Pirates ‘glorious iPad incarnation. I’m sad to hear about Fleck’s soon-to-be passing but can understand how Self Aware Games needs to move on. I’ll be keeping an eye out for the studio’s next project!

Innovative Ad Takeover Coming to 'New York Times' iPad App - Mashable

What’s This?

Open up The New York Times on your iPad this Saturday, and you’ll catch a glimpse – or more Likely, several – of one of the first ad takeovers on the app.

Promote its latest summer series, Ray Donovan , the Showtime network has purchased every single ad slot in the Times ‘iPad app for a single day. Ads come in the form of videos, appearing interstitially and in expandable banner units alongside the article and section pages.

Each

video – there are 26 unique versions in all – is set to play automatically. That may sound invasive, and some will no doubt find it so, but at least there’s no sound unless you turn it on. Tap on a video and Information “hotspots” will Appear, inviting you to learn more about the series and its characters. At the end of each video you can download the season premiere episode, for free. You’ll also be prompted to download the trailer song from iTunes and install Showtime’s iPad app.

You can see the takeover in action in the demo below:

The campaign took several months to execute, Todd Haskell, the Times ‘group vice president of advertising, said in a phone interview with Mashable on Wednesday. Began discussions with a visit from media buying agency OMD to the Times ‘Idea Lab in January. Medialets, in collaboration with Showtime, developed the creative.

Haskell says the auto play feature is a bit of an experiment – he’s hoping they will not mind readers. “Historically, whenever we do something somewhat outside the box … [like] the Mac vs. PC ads (shown below) … readers love it.’re Confident readers will find this beautiful and well done.”

Haskell

I asked why and the takeover of the Times ‘iPad app might be more appealing to advertisers than a takeover of the front page of nytimes.com. “We know the way people engage with tablets is very different from the web,” Haskell says. “Readers [watch] more videos, spend more time per session, go deeper … [Particularly] over the weekend because they have time to immerse themselves in content. [In this instance] readers can really have that pervasive experience, [they'll ] Continuously Be Reminded about this wonderful show. “

The ads could reach as many as a few hundred thousand people: The Times ‘iOS apps have been downloaded 8.3 million times to date, reaching 1.3 million people per month, a spokesperson for the organization said .

iPad Mini arrives in Brazil - too expensive, too late - ZDNet (blog)

The iPad Mini has finally arrived in Brazil – hooray!

Well, Brazilians are not so excited about it – not just because it is eight months late, but also because the iPad Mini sold here is arguably the priciest in the world.

Since yesterday (25 June) the most basic version of the little tablet (Wi-Fi, 16GB) is retailing for R $ 1,300 ($ 590.90) on Apple’s website. Mobile operators are selling the devices with 3G data plans for similarly high prices: the 16GB version is sold for R $ 1,800 ($ 818.18) is a pre-paid customers to Claro, one of the main operators in the country – the pay monthly option retails for R $ 1,350 ($ 613.63).

A quick search online shows That at $ 590.90, the most basic flavor of the iPad Mini in Brazil costs way more than in dry countries as Denmark ($ 456.10), Finland ($ 447.70), Singapore ($ 353.26) the UK ($ 414.55) and the U.S. ($ 329).

Why is it so expensive?

According to news agency G1, the value of the iPad Mini is $ 272 when it arrives in Brazil. About three different imports and national taxes are applied at that stage. Add to That margins for all the parties Involved in the supply chain – from Apple to the final retailer – and presto, you have one hell of a pricey device.

Apple manufacturer Foxconn has a production facility in Brazil, but the iPad Mini, as well as other components for the production of Apple’s tablets and mobile phones are all imported.

According to Sao Paulo-based technology consultancy IT Data, tablet manufacturers seeking tax incentives in Brazil must meet some requirements The have to be met in order to get Exemption of Certain taxes, Which would typically mean a hit to the company of about 12 is 15 percent.

“however, this Implies That you will import some components and buy parts produced in Brazil too. One of the Reasons That Prevent local production is sometimes the process as a whole. It is only worthwhile to produce locally if the amount is significant , “says ivair Rodrigues, research director at IT Data.

“I Believe That the iPad Mini can be produced locally if the sales volume justifies that – and at the moment That is still not the case,” he adds.

Also

According to IT date, about 8.7 million tablets will be sold in Brazil in 2013 – up about 186 percent in relation to 2012 numbers.

Why did it take so long?

Brazilian telecommunications agency Anatel is also Responsible for the homologation of telephony equipment Including mobile devices – in simple terms, this means Apple would not be able to sell the iPad Mini, for example, if the device had not been scrutinized and approved by the agency beforehand.

The process is supposedly Intended That is the ensure devices are compatible with the technologies ADOPTED in Brazil and meet Technical Requirements, as well as appropriate policies in terms of warranty, service and quality. It can take months from the time Anatel authorizes the device until it actually hits to the high street.

There have been occasions where other bodies to get on the way. Last year, tax and Border Authorities were stopping iPhone 5 devices purchased by Brazilians from overseas websites from entering the country – the reason at the time being the origin of the equipment (China) and the associated doubts over its authenticity.

For iOS 7, Apple said it dramatically redesigned the look and feel of the user interface. Everything has been revamped, the company said, Including icons, buttons, and color schemes. An initial beta of iOS 7 was released to developers a couple of weeks ago and a second beta was released on Monday. The software requires developers to sign a privacy agreement, but that has not stopped numerous developers and some blogs from posting extensive hands-on previews of the new OS.

For the head movement feature, 9to5Mac said there are still many kinks to work out for the option to be efficient. It’s unclear if the rumored feature Eventually will end up in the final version of iOS 7

Review: Hex's Code Folio protects your iPad with sleek business style - Macworld

  • Hex Code Folio for iPad $ 80.00 (When Rated)

Though the Hex Code Folio is a bit heavy and bulky, it makes up for it in solid performances as a case and stand.

With its stylish exterior and handy inside pockets, Hex, AOS $ 80 Code Folio case for the third-and fourth-generation iPad is a good option for business travel folks That With Their iPad or take it with them to meetings. The case comes in five solid color options, pick between red, pink, gold, tan, or black.

The Code Folio’s cover is kept shut by an elastic strap.

The Code Folio sports a leather body That gives it a professional look and feel. There, AOS That an elastic strap keeps the cover shut when you, AOR not using your iPad, but it, AOS tightest one of the straps I, Äôve come across on an iPad case, making it frustrating for me to use.

The case, AOS inside cover comes with three card slots for business or credit cards, plus two pockets to store notepads, paper, or documents. It also has an elastic penholder, Äîmade from the same tight elastic as the outside strap, Aito store a stylus (or an ink pen, if you, old-school AOR). However, don, AOT bother slipping a pen or stylus in unless you want the case to close awkwardly and not lay flush over the iPad screen AOS. The cover lacks a trigger for the iPad, AOS Magnetic Sleep / Wake feature, and even a strange design choice, considering That many other cases on the market offer this.

A sturdy, half-inch thick plastic frame holds the iPad in place, and it does a great job: Once I snapped my iPad into the frame and heard a few satisfying clicks, the case did not, AOT want to let go, and it took me several minutes to get my iPad back out. The frame did not, AOT get in the way when I used my iPad, and protected its sides against bumps and drops, Which is a major plus. All that protection did add extra weight and bulk to my iPad, making it a bit unwieldy to hold when reading in bed. The Code Folio case did not, AOT obstruct the iPad, AOS camera, nor did it get in the way of using any ports or buttons, though you can, AOT fit your iPad in a dock-cradle accessory with this case on.

The Code Folio gives you two ways to stand up your iPad in landscape mode, either by flipping around the cover to prop up the iPad in a tent shape, or using one of the three rows of small nubs on the inside cover to create a stand. Both configurations worked well to hold up my iPad as I watched both videos on my couch and on a tabletop.

Bottom line

Though the Hex Code Folio is a bit heavy and bulky, it makes up for it in solid performances as a case and stand. The stylish look also gives your iPad a little extra polish for your next big meeting, but I did wish it worked with the iPad, AOS Magnetic Sleep / Wake feature.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - IGN

? June 24, 2013

Imagine That aliens are invading the Earth and you’ve been put in charge of the defense of the entire planet. Players manage the paramilitary XCOM project, Deciding what new technology projects to research and produce so with the new hotel XCOM troopers go into battle with the best equipment possible. That daunting proposition is at the heart of Firaxis and 2K’s excellent tactical strategy game XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Which Came out last year on PC and consoles and is now available on iPad and iPhone. You can read our full review of That version here. Impressively, the content for the iOS version is nearly identical, minus some graphical detail and the uninteresting multiplayer mode, and the touch controls are fantastic.

turn-based games like XCOM are practically made for touchscreen controls, and the Implementation here is brilliant. Issuing orders on the tactical map is as natural as can be, Particularly given the smart interface layout and convenient shortcuts. It’s true That the camera controls are not terribly responsive, but once I accepted Their limitations, it was not too hard to orient myself and my viewpoint on the battlefield.

The graphics have taken a noticeable step down in the translation to the iPad, almost entirely in terms of the texture resolution. Things can get a bit muddy in some of the close ups and cutscenes, but the soldier and alien animations and the effects of the various weapons and abilities make this one of the better looking games on the platform. If you’re naming your soldiers after close friends, be prepared to watch them fall – permanently – under a hail of brightly colored laser fire.

Despite the lower-res textures in the iPad version, the actual levels are full of interesting visual details and a wide range of environment types. There’s even less variety in the levels on the iPad version than in the PC or console versions, but there are still enough levels Likely That You will not be seeing many of the same ones in the course of a single campaign. That said, the sheer destructibility Of Those environments is phenomenal, and the iOS version That carries over.

XCOM

on iOS has the problem in its console siblings do, however, and that’s battery life. One mission can drink up as much as 25% of an iPhone 5′s battery, so do not expect to be able to play long sessions on the road. This also is not the most complete version, in That it’s lacking not just the mediocre multiplayer mode but also all of the DLC content, from the weak Slingshot missions to the invaluable Second Wave mutators, and even the ability to change soldiers’ armor coloring . It’s not known when or Whether Firaxis and 2K will add in the few missing features, but even if they never come, XCOM is a far larger game than nearly anything else on iOS.

Blind activist Chen given spyware-laden iPad and iPhone - Register

Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup / Recovery

An NYU professor is claiming That blind Chinese dissident Chen Guangchen, who staged a dramatic escape from house arrest and fled to the U.S., was given an iPad and an iPhone loaded with spyware on his arrival at New York University last year.

The self-trained lawyer was imprisoned and then held under house arrest for years after angering the Communist Party by defending local residents in Shandong from various Abuses in its infamous one child policy. In a daring night-time escape last April he fled to the U.S. Embassy and Eventually ended up in New York University, where he was given a fellowship and the use of a Greenwich Village apartment.

His mentor, mentor NYU professor Jerome Cohen has now told Reuters That brought fanboi gadgets as gifts to help the activist communicate with his family back in China were deliberately pre-loaded with malware to spy on him .

Screening the devices just days after they had been received, NYU technicians found spyware Which could allow a third party to track the location of the device and additional password-protected software apparently stolen info backing up to a remote server.

“These people were supposedly out to help him and they give him a kind of Trojan horse That would have enabled them to secretly monitor his communications,” Cohen told the newswire.

“It’s perfectly consistent with Their desire to manipulate and control the situation and know whatever confidential advice he is getting.”

The person who gave Chen the smart devices you Heidi Cai, the wife of activist and ChinaAid founder Bob Fu.

Fu has called the claims “ridiculous” and said his technician That only added a Skype account to the fondleslab after activating both devices.

“Everything was transparent. There was nothing hidden,” he told Reuters .

A second, anonymous source told the newswire That at least three other devices given to Chen that other people also contained suspicious software.

The allegations come at a difficult time for Chen and his supporters after NYU Announced That he would be leaving the university after just a year.

Although the university claims his fellowship was only ever meant to last one year, the blind dissident has publically slammed the uni, arguing That it has bowed to “unrelenting” pressure from China as it looks to finalize a lucrative Shanghai campus there. ®

iPad 5, iPad Mini 2 Release Date Not Happening Soon, Retailers Replenish ... - International Business Times AU

Consumers waiting for iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 small have to wait longer for the release dates of the devices as retailers restocked current models of Apple’s tablet.

It was reported

Earlier That retailers have dwindling stocks of previous iPads That led to the speculations That the next generation of tablets are on its way.

however, third party resellers Best Buy and MacMall Announced That they have the first generation iPad mini and fourth generation full-size iPad back in full stock, with the original price points restored.

It Appears Apple had been making plans to launch the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 sooner and worked to clear out inventory accordingly, but had to pull back at the last minute and temporarily left Best Buy and others without sufficient stock. But the restored inventory That means the iPad 4 and iPad mini are in fact still in production, and points to nothing debuting until at least later this summer.

The full size iPad has had a Retina Display for multiple generations, as will the iPad 5 The iPad Mini has a standard display screen, but is expected to move as a Retina Display of the iPad mini 2

According to rumors, the iPad Mini 2 is speculated to feature a screen with a resolution of 2048 x 1536. This is almost four times the resolution of the present iPad Mini and is equal to the fourth generation iPad, which was released along with the iPad Mini last year. AU Optronics has been rumored to be making displays for the iPad Mini 2

Other specs include a more powerful dual-core A7 processor and a 7.9 inch screen. It will also feature a 10-hour battery life, a FaceTime HD camera, and an iSight camera with 1080 pixels HD video recording. Apple is also trying to reduce the thickness of the iPad Mini 2 by using the Sharp’s IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) technology in its screens.

The iPad 5, on the other hand, is rumored to have no bezels, and the whole form factor has been made sleeker. Horowitz believes to this design indicates That Apple will be calling on Sharp’s IGZO screen technology. Moments after Raymond Cody took flight Tuesday morning, the instrument panel in his cockpit malfunctioned and his navigation system gave out. The pilot, who was flying a single-engine plane across western Colorado to Grand Junction Regional Airport, continued to head toward his original destination, but Realized he had no way of notifying airport officials.

So he grabbed his cell phone and dialed the first number he could find for the airport: the Transportation Security Administration’s customer service hotline. Fortunately, with the help of a TSA agent and his iPad, the pilot was able to land the plane safely without his on-board electronics, According to The Daily Sentinel.

“The airplane engine was not an issue of stopping, it was only the electronics in the airplane. So I had no radio, I had no navigation equipment,” Cody Recalled to Krex-TV.

Making the call at 8:01 am, Cody got in touch with Gene Manzanares, the TSA’s master coordination center officer for Grand Junction, and described the emergency situation. Using an iPad app, Cody was able to track his flight path and relay his position to Manzanares, who helped coordinate the landing with the airport’s control tower.

After talking on the phone for nearly a half-hour during the emergency call, Cody and Manzanares Eventually met in person the Following Day so Cody could thank the TSA agent.

“Gene’s my hero,” Cody told KKCO NBC 11 News. “He was real calm, kept me calm, and I appreciate it.”

The Federal Aviation Administration first approved the use of iPads for the pilots with a charter company in February 2011. Pilots are typically required to carry a bag of paper charts and manuals on board, but the FAA’s decision had the potential to change how pilots view charts in the air.

After the charter company’s successful test period, the FAA extended the iPad option, allowing the FAA-Authorized operators to use the tablet as an alternative to the paper charts.

Most recently, American Airline pilots were granted permission to dump Their heavy bags of paper maps and charts for iPads. The flight-bag Likely change will save on fuel costs – an estimated $ 1.2 million annually.
