first iPad went on sale more than three years ago, and since then all the tablets look more or less the same. It is true that they are becoming more compact, lightweight and thin, but they are still mostly flat rectangles (I know that the rectangle is always flat, but I know what I mean ;)), which differ from each other almost exclusively logo of the manufacturer. Perhaps I exaggerate a little, because not everyone can build iPad Air, but it seems to me that the form of tablets should not be limited to devices “ipadopodobnych” and it can be a bit of mess.
At one time, the most willing to experiment was Sony. Result of the work of Japanese designers minds were two gadgets: a very interesting Sony S Tablet and very … Sony Tablet P controversial. Both were quite innovative, but I feel that a little ahead of their time, which did not have much chance of success.
I remember how much fun I made the Tablet S, because it is well-served by vertically, and at the same time was very light and had a custom screen diagonal, having in this case a lot of sense. Unfortunately, his idea was buried by the imperfections of the first version of Android tabletowego and lack of experience of artists. Then there was the theoretical successor, the Xperia Tablet S, but it was a gadget with an identity crisis, trying to combine the world of its predecessor with the world of iPad clones and ended up entering the deep dullness.
Xperia P Tablet … well, I hope that this idea of ??someone coming back in the future, but after popularizing and refining of flexible OLED screens. Attempting to create this type of equipment when it was available only to the Tegra 3, an early version of Android and classical matrix LCD with poor viewing angles were ambitious, but it looked like the hunting of lions with their bare fists.
much less breakneck attempt to refresh the form of tablets taken … Microsoft Surface and Surface 2 Sure, they are not revolutionary, and roughly resemble the shape of your competition, but you can see them they like the germ of a thought, because the designers were able to give here a few millimeters and grams for the additional functionality provided by the ground “stand”. Kind of a big deal, but for me the tablets and smartphones “anorexia”, which seeks to maximize weight loss without thinking about ergonomics, it is only right development direction and I can put up with the extra weight and thickness, if in return I get something interesting .
This leads us to the equipment, which prompted me to tap on the keyboard for this entry, the new tablet Lenovo Yoga, which for me distant hybrid devices described a moment ago. Already at the first contact with yoga have raised me to mind associations with the Microsoft Surface and the Sony S Tablet.
DifferencesYogi needless to point the finger at anyone, because you can see it right away. It’s all here, metal, cylindrical part of the tablet, integrated hinge “stand”, which not only makes it easy to hold the tablet vertically, but also allows you to place it on the desk i .. longer time because it was hidden in the battery cells. At first this sounds like a set of compromises, which I can not agree, and in practice … is good.
vertical grip for the “bulge” is very natural, because it is a reasonably shaped, but after a longer period of time begins to tease the large mass of the device, almost entirely concentrated in one place. In short, the use of this equipment in a vertical is OK, but I would prefer to 8-inch screen with an aspect ratio 4: 3 and a slightly different weight distribution, which is less tiring to the hand and ease of typing on the onscreen keyboard.
Yogi in the level of service I had to get used to it a little longer. At first I tried to keep her “cylinder” up, because I thought that it needed. It was only later I noticed that the ends of the “cylinder” is felled for a reason and it was done with a view to my wrists. Then I had to learn not to obstruct the speakers, but it went pretty quickly. In the end, I came to the conclusion that it all makes sense and you can fall in love, but … again the unfortunate weight distribution did not allow me to achieve full satisfaction. It’s a bit like a small scratch on a new car – like almost not visible, like a whole does not change but it’s there and you look at the owner. I think we all know the feeling of spending sleepless nights ;)
much less mixed emotions accompanied by the use of the tablet after setting, or placing it on a counter, or another table. Yoga is great for watching movies on the go, because it can be firmly set in the vertical (and maybe even slightly adjust the angle of the screen) and front speakers. This way you can show your friends newfound the hit video on YouTube, or cabaret, and you do not have to worry about who is to hold the tablet, or whether everyone will hear the dialogue. Extra.
But wild animals hidden in me (yes, it’s about sloth) prefers that Yoga can be placed on the counter for 20-30 degrees. Often I use the tablet in bed (I think not only me) and I really like the Tablet PC sets itself almost at a right angle, without combining with stands and grip. Sure, laziness and comfort-in its purest form, but after tablet is in some sense a lazy gadgets, so yoga just brings certain aspects of their design to perfection ;)
Lenovo Idea
to deviate from the standards tabletowych I like. Construction of the tablet and its stand is often useful to me and I hope that Yoga does not die after one generation of devices, as it was the first tablet Sony, because even though the equipment is not perfect (especially to be worked out easily build quality, weight distribution and I would like to see a version with a screen aspect ratio 4: 3, which would be better acquitted in the vertical and a digital photo frame), it brings with it a healthy dose of freshness. I’m curious if anyone can catch up with the competition idea Lenovo, because he seems to have a lot of potential.
I only wonder whether in fact there is demand for gadgets hanging out of the crowd, however, overcome the “anorexic”. And what is your opinion on this? Do you prefer thin and flat tablets, or rather, you are able to opt out of dimensions to functionality and time
